VIGAN CITY, ILOCOS SUR—The Electronic Vigan Inter-Governmental Agencies Network (e-VIGAN) project aims to make more efficient delivery of local government services to Ilocanos.

“The project will widely and directly interconnect the city hall to all barangays, public schools and other government offices,” said Vigan city Mayor Eva Marie Medina.

Ilocanos can use the Internet service for free to address concerns or provide feedback to all levels of government in the city.

To do this, the city government will push for the complete provision of computers and setting up of the Internet or intranet wireless networks for all barangays, public schools and city government facilities.

Medina likened the system to a small scale version of the National Broadband Network (NBN) project that seeks to interconnect all national government agencies to all provinces, cities and municipalities.

“It (NBN) would have hastened communications from the national bureaucracy to the local governments but unfortunately, greed and graft tarnished the good intentions and the project went down the drain,” she said.

Medina lauded President Benigno Aquino III’s administration for pursuing the national telecommunication highway to allow barangay officials, government employees and citizens to transact with each other using the broadband service.

“This will open more windows for innovations and trends on barangay governance to include the disclosure of financial transactions for farmers and fishermen which can all be translated to food on the table,” she said.
