MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— For Sister Juliaan Mullie, the answer to poverty and hunger is teaching people ways and means to permanently alleviate their situation.
This was the inspiration behind Social Action Foundation for Rural and Urban Development or SAFRUDI, a non-profit organization that provides social development and enterprise programs for impoverished communities.
SAFRUDI taps on the unemployed and the out-of-school youth in creating handicrafts made from capiz or mother-of-pearl shells.
“We train our community workers on skills and design to help them establish their own business in the future,” says marketing officer Lenie Fabellon.
Besides developing marginalized communities, SAFRUDI also opens opportunities to other Filipino small and micro entrepreneurs or SMEs by featuring their unique products in trade fairs here and abroad.
“Our partner-producers who come from different parts of the country share the same vision: to help poor communities through the training and livelihood programs their businesses make,” she adds.
Capiz products range from home decorations, table accents, kitchen wares to bags and accessories. These are then sold through its ManoMano trade fairs and are also being exported to Europe, Canada and the US.
“The greatest fulfillment in being part of SAFRUDI is knowing we create hope and change in the lives of many Filipinos,” says Lenie. “Some of them started here since they were young. Years later, it’s not just them but their own families who are now part of our ever-growing community.”
