QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—Halloween is synonymous to ghosts, ghouls and souls. But it does not mean it should take the fun out of the season.
With the long weekend for the holidays, here are some ways on how to celebrate the season.
Dress up for Halloween parties. Aside from going to cemeteries to pay respect to the departed, Filipinos also celebrate the season by dressing up for costume parties and accompanying children around the village for trick-or-treating.
For this year’s office party, environmental consultants Gino Antioquia and Gerard Tolentino decided to dress up as the zombie Michael Jackson and an Egyptian mummy. Together with other officemates who were dressed up as military, Mindanao rebel, Halloween bride and witch, the two were among the best dressed in their office party.
Although his investment for the costume is bigger than the P1,000 cash prize, Antioquia said that being able to cheer up officemates and scare a few co-workers is worth their while.
Give free candies during trick-or-treating. Free candies and other treats are one of the things that children look forward to during this holiday season. But what is better than receiving? Yes, it is giving the free treats.
So this year, stock up sweet candies for kids who will go to your house for trick-or-treating, aside from donning up a spooky costume. Aside from treats, you can also try giving out toys.
Visit a “haunted” location and share horror stories. In almost every town, there are legends of haunted mansions and hotels, roads that never end, a white lady appearing in the middle of the night, or footsteps in an empty room. Discovering these places is sort of a rite of passage or an adventure trip among the young, but it doesn’t mean you cannot do it again as an adult.
In case you cannot go these places, then gather up in a circle and share horror stories with friends and relatives during midnight. Remember the defunct TV show, “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Don’t forget to tell one scary story, whether it is based from experience or something you have heard before.
Catch up with relatives during family reunions. The long weekend is a time to spend with your family. Watching horror movies during midnight is definitely more fun when done with a group of people, especially your siblings or cousins. It is also a good time to play pranks or scare young children using amputated limbs.
Other activities could include movie barbeque parties, joining the village contest for the spookiest designed house, or cooking the favorite food of the departed. Regardless of the activity, it is about spending quality time with the family and catching up with them.
Take time off for a short vacation or rest. The long weekend is a welcome breather by most stressed workers. This is a time when people take a vacation to the beach, a spiritual retreat to a quiet place or simply rest at home.
Others include a trip to the market to replenish their grocery stock, a laundry day or decluttering of old stuff to toss or give away.
