DAVAO CITY, DAVAO ORIENTAL – A group of young women from Muslim, Christian, and indigenous groups have organized themselves to form the Mindanao Youth for Peace Movement (MYPM) whose goal is to helping young people in the region.

The initiative was initially brought up during the recent Mindanao Young Women Leaders Congress held in Davao City, an event that was organized by the Mindanao Commission on Women (MCW).

The congress allowed young women leaders from different groups in the Mindanao region to come up with a movement that aims to improve the lives of young people especially those living in war-torn areas.

In a statement, MCW and Chief Executive Officer Irene Santiago said the MYPM aims at developing ethical leaders of change among young women leaders.  As part of the program, the leaders of the newly-formed group will take skills training on conflict resolution that would fit in their respective societies.

Among the training programs for the MYPM leaders and participants are peer counseling and conflict mediation, which are the same programs taken by another grassroots level group, Mothers for Peace Movement.

MCW Chair Margie Moran-Floirendo also said that the MYPM would help train young leaders in their civic duties that would benefit their respective societies. She also hopes for more leaders coming from young people in Mindanao and share their capabilities to others so as to create more socially capable people.
