QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – A bill filed in Congress is seeking to give public school teachers a 20 percent discount on public transport facilities, health services, restaurants and other business establishments.

According to AKO Bicol Partylist (AKB) Representative Christopher Co, House Bill 5375 is “a way of appreciating the sacrifices of public school teachers.”

Co stressed that public school teachers are given little attention in terms of protection and security. The bill also hopes to  uplift the teachers’ physical and social well-being.

But these grants would still be in accordance with the social justice provision of the Constitution, the lawmaker said.

Meanwhile, AKB Representative Alfredo Garbin Jr. added that public school teachers are one of the most affected by the economic situation in the country.

“Hopefully, this bill will help them cope up with the crisis so they can have a decent and dignified living,” Garbin said.

The privileges from the bill cover public school teachers regardless of their status from permanent, temporary or contractual, provided that they have an income of not more than P60,000 per year.

The 20 percent discount can also be availed for medicines, hotel and lodging houses, eateries and food establishments, recreational and physical fitness facilities and health services.

If passed into law, this would also entitle public school teachers to loans amounting to P20,000 from government lending institutions, provided that the loan is intended for capital for livelihood and other income-generating projects.
