QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Theirs is a story of true friendship between a teacher and a student. Publishing executive Teresa Alvina graduated from the V. Mapa High School in 1948. She was 19 years old back then. One of her favorite teachers was Carmen Geronimo-Pascual, who was then 28 years old teaching Home Economics.

After 63 years, the 82-year old Alvina has finally reunited with Pascual, who is now 91 years old. Pascual still remembers Alvina even after so many years. She received a simple yet heartfelt thank you from her former student for helping her go through high school.

Alvina had sought the help of the Department of Education (DepEd) to look for Pascual. She herself had tried to find her teacher for years, not realizing that they were in fact neighbors.

After getting information from the DepEd regarding the location and status of Pascual, Alvina did not hesitate to pay her a visit and give the “thank you” that she has long been hoping to give.

And over lunch at her former teacher’s residence, Alvina and Pascual talked about their lives at school and out of it. “I am so happy, I searched and I found. Now I have more happy memories to get me through the years ahead,” Alvina said.

The reunion between Alvina and Pascual comes at a time when DepEd is urging people to give thanks to their teachers, who are considered second parents as they help children go through their education.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro stressed that even after the celebrations of September as “Teacher’s Month”, people should remember the efforts given by teachers to ensure that students grow to become good members of society.

With the story of Alvina and Pascual, DepEd hopes that more people would appreciate the bond that made between teachers and their students.
