MALOLOS, BULACAN – Typhoon Pedring’s damage to Bulacan’s agricultural industry is estimated to be 863 million pesos, or about four times more in value suffered by the province after Typhoon Ondoy two years ago.
In 2009, Ondoy brought about an estimated 232 million pesos in damages to Bulacan’s farming industry.
Damage to the fishing industry, meanwhile since Pedring hit early this week was estimated to be around 27 million pesos.
In a report, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported that the damage to Bulacan’s rice and fishing industry was primarily due to strong winds, which uprooted many plants and damaged fish pens.
The town of San Miguel suffered the most damage with losses estimated to be around 613 million pesos. Damage to the agricultural industry in San Ildefonso town is estimated around 110 million pesos.
About 34,000 people in Bulacan were evacuated. Four deaths, all children below 10 years old, were reported
PDRRMC Head Felicisima Mungcal said that the number of deaths due to drowning was less compared to Ondoy due to the availability of rescue units. During Ondoy, Bulacan reported 32 deaths due to drowning, five due to landslides, and another eight were reported missing.
Mungcal said that even before floods arrived rescue units were already deployed in areas with potential flooding.
