MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— Road accidents remain the major cause of injuries among Filipinos this year, according to the Department of Health’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS).
NEISS is a web-based system developed by the DoH that can electronically capture injury-related data from health facilities, and consolidate the data to find trends.
The NEISS said a third of the total 12,729 injury cases happened during travel during the first quarter of the year.
Of the total 3,901 cases of transport and vehicular crashes, only 8.5 percent of the injured motorcycle riders were wearing helmets while only 14.4 percent of injured car occupants were wearing seatbelts, according to the NEISS data.
Of the 3,901 transport-related injuries, almost half (47 percent) involve motorcycle riders, at least six percent were occupants of tricycles and three percent were riding bicycles. The report said about 14.7 percent of vehicular injuries involved pedestrians.
The report said there were 2,374 cases of mauling, 1,693 cases of fall-related injuries, 1,364 cases of contact with sharp objects and 664 cases of injuries from bites and stings.
“Motorcycle riders should wear helmets to protect themselves from the fatal injuries,” said DoH Undersecretary Teodoro Herbosa, advising motorists to adopt measures to reduce the risk of injuries like defensive driving and observance of traffic rules and regulations.
Herbosa also urged commuters to be extra careful when traveling between 8a.m. and 8p.m., which is when over half of transport-related injuries occur. The highest occurrence of vehicular injuries happen between 4p.m. and 8p.m.
Herbosa also reminded drivers and motorists that alcohol intake can impair driving skills.
Central Luzon posted the highest transport-related injuries in the country, followed by Davao. The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and Caraga region had the lowest cases of vehicular accidents.
