QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista is pushing for the approval of an ordinance that will teach “ethics and social justice values” of former President Manuel Quezon in schools.

“We want to promote (the late President) Quezon’s vision and code of citizenship and ethics in the school curriculum in the city to honor him on his birthday today (August 19),” said Bautista during the wreath laying ceremonies on the 133rd anniversary of Quezon.

August is also celebrated as “Buwan ng Wika”. Bautista said he favors promoting the Filipino language and love for country and local culture to fortify the patriotism of Filipinos.

He added that well-developed countries such as the United States, Germany and Japan put high value in preserving their language and have succceded in becoming globally competitive.

Quezon’s Code of Citizenship and Ethics, also known as Executive Order 217, promotes love of country and states: “…it is the home of your people, the seat of your affections, and the source of your happiness and well-being. Its defense is your primary duty. Be ready at all times to sacrifice and die for it if necessary.”

It also promotes good citizenship by respecting the Constitution, paying taxes on time, being noble and loving one’s family. Quezon also urged citizens to be industrious as it contributes to the economy, according to Bautista.

As part of continuing Quezon’s vision for social justice, Bautista said the city government is inugurating two housing sites for low- and middle-income wage earners at a 1.6-hectare near Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma School in Payatas.

During his time, Bautista said that Quezon saw the importance of providing affordable housing for Filipinos, which prompted him to establish the Philippine Housing and Homesite Corp. (now the National Housing Authority) to address the problem.

“Quezon understood the importance that shelter plays in social justice act and Quezon City wants this vision fulfilled up to today by providing this housing projects to at least 400 family beneficiaries,” he added.

i have to agree with mayor herbert that we need to develop self-discipline & high moral & spiritual standards among Filipinos. maybe we need to develop more our patriotism or love of country values. if you love your country you would surely abide by all it’s laws without question. hindi ka tapon basura kahit saan, sunod ka sa lahat batas trapiko, etc. just like in “panatang makabayan” iniibig ko ang pilipinas……sa salita, isip, puso at gawa. sana nga po……….ty
