QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— To protect motorists, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) will intensify its operations to nab carnapping syndicates in the city.

Recent cases of carnapping involved the murder of the vehicle owners Teresa Leaño and Cheryl Sarmiento, said QCPD director Chief Supt. George Regis.

Currently, the QCPD is undermanned with a ratio of police to city population at 1: 964, a far cry from the ideal ratio of 1:500, according to Regis.

To make up for lack of manpower, the city government has been providing the QCPD with more patrol cars and modern crime fighting equipment and facilities.

Through its team-up with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), QCPD have identified the suspects in the Teaño case. “The suspects belong to a big group and we are hopeful that we can arrest and charge them soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mayor Herbert Bautista said the city-wide installation of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) as requirement for the issuance and renewal of business permits at the city’s business permit and licensing office (BPLO) will help curb the number of city crimes.

Business establishments have until December 31 to install CCTVs in their premises or face non-renewal of their business permits, Bautista said.

The CCTV requirement is principally aimed at preventing crimes like carnapping in high-risk establishments such as car dealership stores, schools, convenience stores, gasoline stations, and banks.
