QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Microsoft has partnered with the Quezon City government on a project that will develop a “proof-of-concept” modernization infrastructure.
This would be used as a model for other local government units (LGU) to follow for their own modernization or computerization projects.
The project, called Local and Regional Government Server, was started in late 2010, is initially on internal information management related to governance. Another part of the project is data management on geographical information system (GIS).
The concept is to build an integrated, information-driven infrastructure that would make information available to all departments of an LGU, making processes more efficient. The next stage would be to implement “citizen portals” wherein constituents and residents would be able to access public services online.
Microsoft’s LGU focus is driven by potential modernization projects coming from. Various government offices are implementing computerization plans aimed at improving internal information sharing as well as to improve front-side public services access.
Microsoft Asia Pacific Regional Director for Government Chuah Seng Heng said during a press event that the Aquino administration’s focus to improve front-line public services is a major business potential for Microsoft, which will work with its regional IT service providers to address the needs of LGUs.
Chuah said the results of their initial foray on intelligent governance would be used to show to other LGUs who might want to institutionalize their own modernization projects. He said the benefits of an intelligent LGU infrastructure is increased internal productivity and efficiency in delivering services.
