QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA–The Quezon City government is eyeing a mass relocation of informal settlers to prevent them from living in danger zones.
The local government is planning to relocate some 2,000 families this March in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, and Barangay San Isidro, Montalban.
The National Housing Authority (NHA) has already committed the provision of at least 2,000 housing on these areas.
In an advisory, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said that these families need to vacate their dwellings located in sidewalks, alleys, roads, and waterways which are identified as hazardous places to live in.
“We must not be caught unprepared for this eventuality. This will be chaotic because of the number of families affected, but we must encourage them to cooperate and accept the relocation package offered by the government because it is for their own protection and benefits,” Bautista said, noting that the relocation should be conducted during the vacation of students.
Bautista ordered the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (QCDRRMC) to ready by March 15 for the initial preparations.
The government is also intensifying efforts to enlighten informal settlers who are opposing the project.
Bautista also added that the local government will submit its recommendation for the mass relocation to President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar Binay.
The local government wants to avoid what happened in New Manila and in North Triangle which is why it will also seek the help of agencies like Philippine National Police-Quezon City Police District (PNP-QCPD), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the NHA to have an orderly transfer of these families.
