BARCELONA, SPAIN -  Filipino singer Alexandra Escalona is making waves for her singing prowess at the “Operación Triunfo” talent show in Spain.

Escalona sang “Hero” by Mariah Carey during an audition and was selected as one of the Top 16 from some 7,000 hopefuls who auditioned in the show.

Operación Triunfo is said to be the biggest singing contest in Spain.

The 18-year-old Alexandra is following the footsteps of Filipino-Americans Jasmine Trias, Ramiele Malubay, and Thia Megia who became internationally known through talents show like “American Idol.”

Alexandra was born and raised in Spain. Aside from her singing talent, she endeared herself to the judges with her wit.

In one episode, she was asked “What do Filipinas eat to become beautiful?” and she answered “arroz, mucho arroz (rice, more rice).”

Alexandra is also the first Mutya ng Barcelona, and before joining the Operación Triunfo, she also won the third place in Global Pinoy Singing Idol.

In an interview with Ang Bagong Filipino, she shares that she joins contests not to win but rather gain experience and get to know more people.

She currently studies Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña in Spain.
