QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA–Residents of Barangay Sacred Heart District IV in Quezon City trooped to voting precincts early in the hopes of putting the right person as the community’s next barangay leader.

The voters went to Kamuning High School, one of the designated poll precincts, amid tarpaulins and posters of local candidates. Voters were given flyers outside the school’s vicinity despite the ban on campaign paraphernalia near the precincts.

Some voters prepared a list of names to make the voting process faster and to be “independent” from the influence of the supporters of some local candidates.

Edison Co, a voter since 1986, said he wanted to take part on the local elections because he still believes that the barangay officials are at the core of governance.

Lahat ng basic na pangangailangan natin ay nakukuha pa rin natin sa kanila kaya naniniwala pa rin ako sa kakayan nila at bumoboto (We still get the basic needs of the community through barangay officials that’s why I’m here to vote),” said Co, noting that a good leader must be “honest, trust worthy, and sincere.”

Venus Martinez meanwhile, a voter for the past 10 years, considered the barangay chair as the “padre de familia” of the community and the officials chosen by their people will lead the peace and order of the community.

Sana magkaisa lahat at gusto ko sana maganda ang magiging patakaran, matulungan ang mga senior citizen at gabayan ang mga kabataan ng mananalong kapitan (I hope for unity and I am hoping that the next captain would help senior citizens, lead peace and order, and guide the youth),” said Martinez while waiting for her turn to vote.

Napoleon Luna, a 56-year-old voter, on the other hand said that he would like to exercise his right to vote to catapult the best person to lead them. However, he said felt sad that some registered voters in their barangay were not certified residents of the area.

Nakakalungkot na may mga ganoong voters dito, sana may mga taong makipaglaban para sa karapatan nila wala kasi tayong matibay na batas para sa mga ganyang tao. (It’s sad that there are those kinds of voters here, I just hope that someone would step up to fight for their right because the law against this practice is not implemented).”

“I hope that the elected leader would be a good example to the residents and would prioritize helping the poor,” said Luna proudly showing his inked index finger.

First-time local voter Jeffrey Dagdagan said that he is hoping of having a non-corrupt official.

“I know the potentials of a barangay chair in leading small communities and I still believe that there are still non-corrupt local officials that’s why I’m here,” said Dagdagan.

Although different local candidates positioned their stations near the school, the elections were generally peaceful.
