MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – On the eve of the death anniversary of the late President Corazon Aquino, a giant photo mosaic of her image was unfurled on the grounds of Quirino Grandstand.

The image, a concept by photojournalist Revoli Cortez, measures 250 by 200 feet and formed by a collection of 3,200 photos of the revered former president, fondly referred to as Tita Cory by Filipinos.

The mosaic, which is said to have cost P2 million to make, covers at least four basketball courts and weighs about 4,000 kilos. Around 150 students from nearby Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila unveiled the mosaic, signaled by President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

The tarpaulin covered nearly half of the grassy area of the Quirino Grandstand. It trumps the 180 by 160 feet photo mosaic of former President Gloria Arroyo that was presented on her 62nd birthday last April 2009; as well as the 200 by 160 feet photo mosaic of Vice President Jejomar Binay that was unveiled in November of last year.

Cortez said he has submitted Cory’s photo mosaic as an entry in the Guiness World Records for verification. But is it really the world’s biggest?

A quick search at the Guiness World Records’ website indicates that the current record is held by a huge baby picture in China, a 33 meter by 20 meter (or 108.2 feet by 65.6 feet) image presented in 2008. In the same year, the United Kingdom revealed “The Big Picture”, a 30 by 30 meter (98.4 by 98.4 feet) image of British boxer Arthur James Bunce. His image was taken in 1926.

Not to be outdone, Japan attempted to break the record for the biggest photo mosaic with a 31.7 by 42.8 meter (104.7 by 140.4 feet) image of renowned Japanese poet Misuzu Kaneko, unveiled last January.

With no other photo mosaic measuring larger than 150 by 150 feet, the Cory  mosaic can be considered as the world’s largest, pending recognition by Guiness World Records.

Though it is touted to be the largest, the number of Cory photos used (3,200) pales in comparison to the above mentioned entries. The baby photo mosaic in China is composed of 105,196 individual photos. The Big Picture in the UK contains 112,896 individual images, while Japan’s Kaneko mosaic has the highest number with 120,000 photos.

This is because the Cory mosaic uses much larger pictures, measuring about a foot across, while those in other countries use regular R3- or R4-sized photos.

Nevertheless, the Philippines can be proud for having broken previous records three times in a row, with gigantic photomosaics of Arroyo, Binay and now Tita Cory.
