CEBU CITY, CEBU – The Filipino community here just can’t seem to get over the famous campaign slogan of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III even though the election hype already subsided.
Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama asserted that President Aquino’s “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap,” is not “entirely correct.”
Rama added that it’s the confinement of most Filipinos to a rather lax lifestyle that tends to keep the country at its feeble state.
He goes on by stating his own political maxim, in vernacular no less: “Kung walay mangawat, daghan mabuhat, daghan madawat. (The absence of thieves is tantamount to vast possibilities, and infinite opportunities)”
Bloggers also seem to be in unison with Rama’s assessments.
An entry in the blog Sanamagan! stated that “walang mahirap, kung walang corrupt” is incorrect. Rather, it should be the other way around “merong corrupt, dahil maraming naghihirap.”
In a forum on Sulit.com.ph, “Tweenshopper” added her own viewpoint on what the real cause of corruption is by stating: “Corruption is not only in the hands of current officials…it can breed in the hearts and mind of individual citizens. So you can’t also eradicate corruption by just kicking out the present leaders.”
With this famous slogan, it is expected that Filipinos will continue scrutinizing President Aquino’s every move he makes, or in this case, even the words.
