ANGELES CITY, PAMPANGA – An elaborate ruse and the use of a social networking website helped police in this city arrest a suspected serial killer accused of murdering three foreign nationals and six Filipinos here.
Reports said Angeles City police tracked down suspect Mark Dizon, a 28-year-old computer technician, through the popular social networking website Facebook.
The niece of one of Dizon’s victims reportedly identified the suspect through Dizon’s Facebook account.
The Angeles City police, after getting a positive identification, then devised an elaborate ruse to lure Dizon out of his hiding place.
Police reportedly coordinated with Dizon’s father, Troadio Dizon Jr., to set-up a meeting with Dizon. Police had to convince the younger Dizon that he will be meeting with members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
The suspect took the bait and Angeles City police swooped in and nabbed Dizon, who was subdued after a brief struggle.
There have been many cases of police using Facebook to track down crime suspects, including cases in the US, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, among others. The Angeles City police thus join the ranks of lawmen to use technology as a tool against crime.
Local residents and the expat community in Angeles City, meanwhile, expressed satisfaction with the successful arrest of the victim and the way the Angeles City police handled the case.
