MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – Among the sea of yellow-clad supporters who trooped to the Quirino Grandstand were a thousand bright and smiling kids who woke up early to witness the historic inauguration of President Benigno Aquino III.

Proudly wearing their complete uniform and wearing orange “Binay” caps, more than a thousand scouts came all the way from Pampanga to witness the inauguration of the two most powerful leaders in the country.

“We hope that the two leaders can live by the Boy Scout Law at all times and we wish that they will prioritize reconciliation over hatred and self-interest,” says Pampanga District Council director Edgardo Timbol

He says he does not expect much to happen during Aquino’s first 100 days of office but he is hoping the new Chief Executive can reconcile political rivals so “everyone can work together and move forward as a nation”.

Binay is currently the national president of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP). Because of this, Timbol is optimistic there is a better chance that problems of their organization will be addressed.

“We believe that having Binay with the BSP will be a big help for us. BSP is a worldwide recognized organization and we hope that more can sponsor our young scouts whenever we have special activities in and outside the country,” he says.

In its own way, he says the BSP plays a role in building character among young Filipinos and adds this tradition will continue regardless who becomes elected as the country’s leaders.
