QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA- Before it was just “goodbye”, now the anti-Arroyo sentiment on Facebook has gone bolder with a new fan page urging users to sign a petition to put the former president in jail.

Founded by the Youth Revolt and other anti-Arroyo groups, the Imprison Arroyo Movement (IAM) aims to literally punish the outgoing president and make her “accountable for all the crimes she committed against the Filipino people within her 9 years stay in power”.

As of this writing, more than a thousand Facebook users have already “liked” the page, which posted articles about scandals that implicated former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her family, including the infamous ZTE broadband deal and the killing of journalists in the Maguindanao Massacre.

The online petition will be launched on June 29, a day before Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is formally sworn in as the country’s next president.

“It will also be introduced to schools, workplaces and communities for the signature drives,” says Christian Yamzon, one those who founded the IAM

The people behind this latest anti-Arroyo movement are also looking to present a proposal to Aquino, particularly addressing the youth sector. “IAM will also draft and present its demands to the new government of President Noynoy Aquino to prosecute Mrs. Arroyo in the soonest possible time,” according to the Facebook page.

Yamson says they are challenging Aquino to imprison Arroyo within his first 100 days in government. The online petition has 79 signatories so far two days after it was posted.

Spurred by the recent elections, several groups have been capitalizing on social networking sites like Facebook to spread their advocacies.

The Dear Noynoy page, for example, gathers suggestions for the incoming president from Facebook users. The same group also started the Dear Gloria page. Even Aquino’s younger sister Kris, a famous TV personality, isn’t spared and became the subject of a number of fan pages on Facebook.

Despite recent privacy issues, random surveys indicate this is not making Filipinos use Facebook any less. Expect similar Facebook pages to appear soon.
