MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – Moments after outgoing president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo delivered her final speech on national television, the Internet was flooded with criticisms about her administration.
Arroyo’s “goodbye speech”, delivered a week before she officially steps down from office, was aired live on all local channels 7p.m. Wednesday. In her brief five-minute speech, she called on Filipinos to support newly elected president Benigno Aquino III and vice-President Jejomar Binay
She then enumerated her administration’s achievements in the past 9 years, saying:
“Look around you in our cities, as you drive by office towers that have changed the skyline… in our provinces, as you drive along the roads, bridges and the ports where we have made massive investments,” she said. ABS-CBNnews.com posted a transcript of Arroyo’s peech.
In a forum on Mylot.com, member The Advocate described the speech as “stomach turning”, saying: “I think the show “Lie To Me” will have a lot of material from her.” Another member mspitot says: “I think she took more time enumerating her accomplishments than saying farewell and congratulations to the new leaders.”
Blogger Fernando Gagelonia also posted his thoughts on the speech and said Arroyo avoided talking about certain issues, saying:
“Uninterrupted mass poverty and jobless growth; continuing human rights violations highlighted by the unsolved Maguindanao massacre and the wanton killing of journalists; lack of accountability and transparency in governance, and corruption in government agencies. But then again, life goes on.”
A search for “GMA farewell speech” on Twitter also yielded a flurry of negative comments. This ABSCBNnews.com article also generated similar comments from readers.
Blogger Joe Torres, Jr. said that despite the prime time slot, the people and even the media seemed to be not listening, noting the lack of “breaking news” online, saying: “It was a forgettable speech, something that failed to touch a chord.”
