QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—Now that they have been officially proclaimed, the Filipino people are expecting President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Vice-President Jejomar Binay to make good on their promises – fighting corruption and improving living conditions all throughout the country.
Aquino, the lone son of slain Senator Ninoy Aquino and former president Cory Aquino, pegged his campaign largely on his anti-corruption stance. Binay, meanwhile, promised progress similar to what he’s achieved as Makati City mayor for two decades.
Simplicia Panganiban, a resident of Quezon City, says she expects Aquino to reduce corruption in government in his first 100 days and also help provide work for unemployed like her. “I also expect the same from Binay because he promised a life like Makati, I really hope he can make it in the whole country,” she says.
Ronnie Lariola, a resident from Pampanga, is hoping to avail of free education and other services similar to those enjoyed by residents in Makati. During his campaign, Binay has often cited benefits like subsidized education and healthcare enjoyed by his constituents in Makati.
Bing Lasem, an Alpha Phi Omega fraternity brother of Binay, expects the latter to prioritize the poor while focusing on the education sector. “I believe local governance and education are his forte, therefore he should focus on that as vice president,” Lasem says.
Rosa Munoz, a government employee, believes fighting corruption should be one the priorities of President Aquino. “I’ve seen the worst in the government and I really hope that Noy (Aquino) has the political will to punish those corrupt officials,” she says.
A lot is riding on the shoulders of the 50-year old Aquino, who many see as continuing the legacy of his accomplished parents. Penciano Santos of Caloocan City says Aquino needs the cooperation of his countrymen in order to fulfill his promises.
“He cannot solve these problems alone. Senators and all the Filipinos must work together to make it happen. Parang pagtatayo yan ng bahay, hindi tatayo kung walang haligi,” says Santos. He believes the “Noy-Bi” tandem will be good since both have pro-poor advocacies.
