QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – Efren Penaflorida, this year’s CNN Hero awardee, is hoping Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III will have enough political will to fulfill his promise of wiping away corruption in government.
“Sana lahat ng ipinangako niya gaya ng matuwid na daan laban sa kurapsyon ay matupad,” says Florida, noting Aquino’s political ads that carry anti-corruption themes.
Penaflorida laments rampant corruption in government today and is hoping the next administration will improve the situation, particularly in the education sector.
A teacher and social worker, he founded the Dynamic Teen Company, which offers alternative education to young people in slums and depressed areas using a kariton or wooden pushcart stocked with books and other paraphernalia.
After his CNN triumph, the kariton classroom is now being replicated in other countries and a digital version is reportedly being developed.
“DepEd (Department of Education) has so many corruption issues now and it affects primarily the students who lack enough classroom, books and better access to education. I hope that President-elect Noy (Aquino) has the political will to really fight corrupt officials so that he won’t get bullied by these people,” he adds.
Florida says he and his friends themselves dedicated time and effort to document the election and report untoward incidents in their area. Overall, he says he is happy with how quickly winners were proclaimed.
“People voted for him because they believe that we can rely on him as an agent of change,” Florida says, referring to Aquino.
