MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – White or blue collar, there is no job too easy or too small. As a way of honoring hardworking Filipinos, the Department of Labor and Employment opens its search the toughest jobs in the country.

DoLE assistant secretary Joji Aragon says this partnership with pharmaceutical brand Alaxan is meant to exemplify the dignity of Filipinos who hold some of the toughest jobs all over the world.

Ito ay pagkilala na ang mga trabahong ito gaya ng mining, ship building, welding at iba pa ay kailangan din ng attention at pagpapahalaga (This is to honor those in fields like mining or ship building that need to be given more value) ,” says Aragon, who adds this is only a first step in DoLE’s efforts to give recognition to Filipino workers.

Filipino workers here and abroad can join by logging on to www.toughestjobsphilippines.com. All they need to do is register and upload a photo, accompanied with an explanation on why they have the toughest jobs.

The entry who gets the most number of votes online will receive a cash prize and trophy as ward.

Aside from online voting, DOLE will also screen and judge the entries. What is described as a “tough” job can be relative, so Aragon says the department has formulated a criteria for judging. DoLE will announce the winner on August 21.

“This is not just physical toughness but also the vulnerabilities of the workers in all areas such as emotional, physical and psychological. There are many ways how we identify a job as the toughest,” she says.

The search, says Aragon, also gives attention to employees like drivers, who are usually not covered by benefits like SSS or health insurances. Alaxan brand representative Sheila Rono, meanwhile, says salary is not a factor at all in choosing the winner.

Both DoLE and Alaxan did not specify the cash prize or how many winners will be selected although both promise to update these details on the website.
