The proclamation of the first nine senators has been lauded as the fastest ever in poll history due to automation. Except for first-timers Marcos and Guingona, the rest of those newly proclaimed are incumbent or returning senators.
Meanwhile, Comelec commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the poll agency is not proclaiming a 13th senator to replace Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, who is set to become the country’s next president.
“There will be no 13th senator proclaimed because the law provides the election of only 12. In case Aquino vacates his post by June 30 when he gets elected as president, the Congress can amend the law to allow for a 13th senator to be proclaimed or (conduct) special polls,” Sarmiento said in an interview.
The Comelec said it needs to canvass remaining 515,488 votes from seven municipalities in Lanao Del Sur needs before proclaiming elected party list groups.
