QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Incumbent officials and familiar names dominated this year’s local elections.
In Manila City, incumbent mayor Alfredo “Fred” Lim and vice mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso toppled rivals by a wide margin of votes. In an interview prior to the May 10 polls, Lim said he believes Manila residents still want him to stay as mayor in order to continue to pending projects. But Lim’s long-time rival Lito Atienza vowed to file a protest, citing irregularities in the automated polls.
In Quezon City, incumbent vice-mayor Herbert “Bistek” Bautista won over rival Michael Defensor. Bautista’s runningmate Joy Belmonte also won as vice mayor (winning over Defensor’s runningmate Aiko Melendez) while the latter’s father, former mayor Sonny Belmonte, will now serve as congressman.
Batangas governor Vilma Santos and her husband Senator Ralph Recto won their respective bids for reelection. Liberal party chairman Hernani Braganza also won as mayor of Alaminos, Pangasinan. In Albay, the Lagman clan still rules the political scene as congressman Edcel Lagman and Tabaco City mayor Krisel Lagman-Luistro were also re-elected to another term.
The Marcos family also figured prominently in this year’s polls, led by Ferdinand Marcos Jr. , who was already proclaimed senator. His mother and former First Lady Imelda won as Ilocos Norte congressman while his sister Imee won as provincial governor, winning over cousin Michael Keon.
More significantly, former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo won via landslide as congressman in her home province of Pampanga, one of five Arroyos touted to figure in the next Congress.
