MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA— Bloggers are reacting differently to an earlier pronouncement by Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III that he would prefer taking his oath of office as president before a barangay chairman than newly appointed Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Corona, who took his oath on Monday, has said he has no problem with Aquino’s plans. The senator, who is yet to be proclaimed as the next president, has opposed Corona’s appointment by outgoing president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

In his blog “The Right To Speak”, lawyer Renato Bautista Jr. says the appointment of Corona “effectively ties the hands of Noynoy”. If Aquino disregards Corona’s appointment, he says this will antagonize the Supreme Court “whose members will not take kindly the embarrassment that will befall one of their own”.

In the Manila Review, blogger Paul Farol says Aquino’s “unwarranted antagonism” he is showing against the Chief Justice will be one major problem facing his presidency. In an earlier an open letter to Noynoy, he says: “I also do hope that you take the lead in showing our people that you are willing to follow the rules even though the outcome of those rules are not favorable to any political goal or interest that you may have.”

Farol’s post generated mixed reactions from readers. On the issue of undermining the Supreme Court, Jose Acelajado says: “If Noynoy decided to take his oath before a barangay captain, then this sums up the kind of administration we will be getting!”

“CN”, meanwhile, says: “We should salute Noynoy for being tough against the indecencies of the Arroyo government.” To which “Manila Paper” replied: “Aquino needs to stop taking things personally and remember that he is representing not himself but the institution that is the office of the President.”

In her blog, journalist Ellen Tordesillas expects “no boring moments in the Noynoy Aquino presidency” due to his open opposition against Corona’s appointment. How Aquino will handle this “brewing confrontation”, she says, will define his presidency.
