QUEZON CITY, MANILA— Though ranked low in surveys, senatorial candidate Risa Hontiveros- Baraquel believes her chance of winning is getting stronger as the elections draw near.
Baraquel, Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party representative, is running under the Liberal Party ticker whose standard bearer is Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
In Pulse Asia’s March survey, the journalist-turned-politician was ranked 21st behind veteran solons. But she remain optimistic that she can still make it to the final 12 although admitting that recent glitches in the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) automation system lessens her confidence in a clean and honest elections.
“With the glitches and possible delays, the Liberal Party is also preparing and we want to call on all the people to watch their votes seriously,” she says. “Be at your precinct early and guard your votes.”
If she wins, she says her priority bills will be on women and healthcare. “I plan to re-file the Reproductive Health (or RH) Bill and I still have two more bills on women concerns.”
The former newscaster is also keen on proving that she is more than just a pretty face from among the current crop of senatorial candidates. Kris Aquino, sister of Sen. Aquino, appears in TV ads endorsing her as senator. Likewise, Ogie Alcasid is vocal in his support.
Aside from the pro-women bills, Hontiveros also eyes proposing bills against corruption in the public sector and widening the scope of government health services.
