QUIRINO CITY, ISABELA– A nurse by profession, Victor Callangan decided to instead pursue a different career path born out of his particular interest in wood crafting.
He started out six years ago with school tables and chairs, and then eventually shifted to wood art after establishing Countrybarn Woodcrafts.
“The most common material we use for our pieces is wood from the Gmelina or what we call the Isabela paper tree,” he shares.
Also called Yemane, Gmelina arborea is known for its fast growth rate. It is often used in pulp and paper-making, house timbers and poles while the wood is used for musical instruments and furniture.
Many of the products from Countrybarn Woodcrafts include wall decorations in abstract designs as well as mirrors in different shapes and sizes.
“The pieces which are often brought by locals and foreigners include the mother and child and our wood-stained version of the Holy Family,” Victor says.

Countrybarn Woodcrafts also does customize designing for clients and can make pieces to as long as eight feet.
