PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA— With children becoming even more exposed to all forms of media including the Internet, just how can parents, teachers and all those concerned effectively develop media literacy among kids?
Child and family expert Dr. Esther Joos-Esteban encourages the use of parent-teach media management, which seeks to teach children a better way to comprehend, interpret and use any form of communication and media content.
One way of practicing this is by assessing a child’s media history. Start observing what shows they like watching or which characters from shows they like imitating. This can give you an insight to what sort of influence kids are getting.
In exercising control over media, Dr. Esteban stresses the importance of discussing the programs and images that children view.
“Parent-teacher should take advantage of these ‘teachable’ moments to talk about the non-violent means and solutions to problems and help guide the child to uphold basic moral values,” she says.
More importantly, children must learn and develop making responsible free choices as young as they are. This involves being able to freely apply values in decision making in terms of interpreting which content is suitable for them.
“Media is a huge phenomenon in these times. It can either be our ally or our enemy which is why we have to learn how to tame the media as well,” Dr. Esteban says.
