NAGA CITY, CAMARINES SUR— With houses and condominiums growing even smaller, most home owners nowadays prefer “all-in-one” furniture. This inspired a Naga-based entrepreneur to come up with a multifunctional sala set using local materials and recycled waste cuts.
Francia Flores, co-owner of the Nitz Furniture and Piano Center, have been in the business of furniture making for 16 years along with her husband Nestor Flores, an engineer. The pieces they sold back then were what most people would call traditional or old-school furniture.
It wasn’t long before this former business rivals-turned-life partners knew it was time to ride the changing tides of modern living.
“We realized that we had to redevelop the traditional concept of furniture making which we inherited from our parents. Our pieces needed to improve in terms of proportion, quality and designing that would also fit the needs of our market,” Flores said.
The couple then began conceptualizing for new ideas and thus, arrived at their very own “convertible” furniture complete with wheels on each end, making it easier to move from one pad to another.
“These days we need to conserve as much space as we can. Every cubic millimeter should not be put to waste,” she stressed.
Their sala set is priced at about P30, 000. Not bad for an almost-portable piece that transforms into a bed, cabinet, and a shoe-rack.
Besides being space-conscious, the couple also ensures that all their suppliers of hard wood and Philippine marine plywood have all the necessary permits from the government to cut trees as well as plant new ones.
“Fellow entrepreneurs in the furniture making industry should go the extra mile to ascertain that our environment is also being taken care of,” she said.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has recently awarded Nitz Furniture at the recent One Town, One Product expo for its multifunctional sofa-bed under its Most Innovative Products category.
