PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA – If you’re the kind of parent who finds it tough to teach your children the value of money, a visit to this exhibit might help.

The “Money Matters for Kids” exhibit at the Galeriya Bangko Sentral at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila features new and engaging methods to teach young visitors how to save and spend wisely.

Here are a few very interesting topics and displays featured in the exhibit:

Money and trust – Since the time when bartering was the most common form of exchange and trade across civilizations, money has been indispensable. However, most people tend to overlook that apart from enabling them to buy, money also highlights the trust that occurs when two people transact using it.

Evolution of the Philippine currency –Children can view old and new kinds of coins using a magnifying glass. The installation of coins ranges from commemorative to the Bagong Lipunan Series of 1973. Also being showcased are coins from Asia and bills from different countries around the world.

Interactive stations – The exhibit has different stations that gives kids a feel of transacting their own money from a bank and an automated teller machine or ATM. The interactive station features a game of grocery-shopping, puzzles, trace-the-coin coloring kiosk, an authenticity test activity and modular booths to test the kids’ proficiency in the fundamentals of mathematics.

The piggy bank— Unknown to most kids and even adults, the humble piggy bank is actually a derivative of the word pygg, a kind of clay used until the 18th century to save money.

“Money doesn’t grow on trees” – This is the last portion of the exhibit explaining to kids the value of earning money by working hard.

The most compelling lesson kids will learn from the exhibit is that money, no matter how small, has a corresponding value. Aside from young visitors, parents too can learn a thing or two about spending and budgeting practices by simply joining their kids throughout the entire learning process.

The Money Matters for Kids Exhibit is sponsored by the Citi Foundation, Museo Pambata Foundation, Inc. and Philippine Business for Social Progress. The exhibit is open to the public until October 29.
