MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – The Instituto Cervantes de Manila is set to stage a free interactive exhibit that highlights the progression of Spanish videogames from the 1980s to the present.

The exhibit, dubbed “Arsgames: Past and Present of the Videogame in Spanish,” will feature audio-visual samples of Spanish videogames to give guests an overview of how the industry has evolved in the past three decades with the introduction of more technological advancements in making “interactive artworks.”

Slated to conduct lectures on September 16 (in English) are Spanish professor and Arsgames founder Flavio Escribano and Spanish videogame designer Mar Canet.

The two will discuss Spanish videogames from several points of view such as the prolific Spanish production of videogames in the 1980s – considered as the Golden Age of the Spanish video gaming -  to the technological crisis of the 1990s and its recent comeback as one of the main producers of videogames worldwide.

Moreover, the lectures will also tackle the use of videogames in education, videogames as an expressive medium, and as a powerful tool of communication, which is used by more than 500 million people in the West.

As one of the founders of Arsgames, a site dedicated to the studies and art of videogames, Escribano is constantly uploading content on the web to disseminate the results of his research.

Canet, on the other hand, is a videogame computer engineer and designer. After two years as a scholar at the Escuela Superior de Diseño, he expanded his studies to the field of game design at the University of Central Lancashire in England. He is currently a resident artist in Hangar.

Interested participants will be given the chance to have a feel of how the Spanish videogames are played at Instituto Cervantes’ Interactive Exhibit, which will feature game demos, expert reviews, previews and walkthroughs.

Prior the exhibit, Instituto Cervantes also launched a month-long film cycle entitled “Realism in Spanish Cinema”, which aims to give interested audiences an understanding of how Spanish films deploy realist forms to address social and political issues present in societies. This will run in the same venue until September 24.

“Arsgames: Past and Present of the Videogame in Spanish” is organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines and the Spanish Agency International Cooperation for Development (AECID).

The interactive exhibit will run from September 14 to 30. For more information, please call 5261482 or visitInstituto Cervantes de Manila at 855 T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila.
