CALOOCAN CITY, METRO MANILA— Filipino women love fashion and nothing completes a good outfit and makeup without clean fingertips with matching nail art.

This is why Filipino-Chinese entrepreneur Lynette De Ocampo ventured into this business with her online store La Uña Loca Nail Art.

“Getting your nails done not only involves getting manicure and a nail polish. Most nail spa houses now offer nail art by hand-designing small patterns or drawings or the use of stickers and gems on the nails,” De Ocampo says.

The entrepreneur saw the profit in the business after sharing a stall for nail art tools with her friend at 168 Mall in Manila some three years ago. Last year, she used her savings of P100,000 to import from China her stock of nail art tools and services.

Aside from neon colors, De Ocampo says that the latest trend in nail polish today is the cracking nail polish design wherein a second layer of nail polish naturally dries up to show a cracked design over a layer of enamel polish.

Big clients of De Ocampo include nail spas and salons who wanted to offer high-end manicure and pedicure services through imported nail polish that has less or no odor at all and stays for up to two weeks.

She, however, had clients who started out trying nail art on their own by buying a practicing wheel, a set of brushes or pen to form a design until they can do it good enough to start offering home service for nail art.

“Filipinos are fashionistas and they want to keep up with the trend as well so offering them my products makes it easier for them to do designs. In malls, they often find the regular colors so I try to keep a stock featuring unique colors not readily available here in the Philippines,” De Ocampo says.

She adds that “if you really are artistic, you can create unique nail art designs that will set you apart from others.”

For most micro-entrepreneurs, De Ocampo says going online is a good choice especially if you cannot yet afford to rent a space for your stall. For her business, she set up a Facebook page to promote her business and expand her clientele aside from friends and former buyers she knew from her earlier business venture.

For customers who order nail art products worth P5,000 worth and above, De Ocampo offers free delivery around Metro Manila.
