QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Collectors Aza Camps and Joana Hoffman wants to share the simple joys of hunting and hoarding quirky and rare bits and pieces.

Anique Anique (a word play of ‘anything unique’) is a traveling hobby store that Aza and Joana set up just this year. Both are Fine Arts graduates from the College of the Holy Spirit and now work as art directors for a cosmetics brand.

Aza says their hobby of collecting a hodgepodge of things and trinkets serves them and others well and it is also “a very healthy past time.”

“It’s therapeutic for us in a way. When we see items that are oddly beautiful, we buy them and resell to friends,” Aza says. “Collecting “is really just something that perks us up when work or our other responsibilities tire us.”

Aza and Joan have a particular fondness for things reminiscent of Marie Antoinette (the former Queen of France) whose taste was inclined to the small and elegant rather than the ostentatious.

“We only look for small yet visually appealing things that don’t really stand out when displayed alongside other things but lights up the mood of a room when displayed,” Aza says.

Anique Anique collections are also influenced by classic novels like Alice and Wonderland and reflect the renaissance of Paris which they enhance with their own eclectic touch.

For the two, putting up Anique Anique will always be about sharing their collections to others. Though the two are very secretive as to where they source some of the items, the important thing is that others benefit without going to the trouble of sourcing themselves.

Aza also retains her passion for free-hand sketching by drawing on unconventional mediums like a chopping board for her canvas. Along with her artworks, they sell glass wares, handmade accessories, and T-shirts in bazaars from P25 to P500.

“When we see that people appreciate the collection, it’s also as if a part of our personality is being appreciated,” Joan says.

Hobbyists are somewhat categorized in society as either impractical tinkerers or impulsive hoarders but seeing some enthusiasm from a few like-minded people gives Ava and Joan a sense of affirmation.

“It’s nice to know that some people actually see the sense it what we do. Our motivation might not be as deep as the others who would rather go for utility but that does not make this any less of an interest or hobby,” Aza says.
