QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – This group of young entrepreneurs design T-shirts   that are partly meant as conversation pieces.

Kenrick Bea, Jimbert Carballo, David Choa and Patrick Quinay established Qwezer early this year looking to sell unique shirts online.

All of them being industrial designers, Kenrick says they wanted to apply their know-how in industrial production to a business that would also highlight their artistic skills.

“We initially just wanted to get the experience of putting up a business together but in the long run, we developed the desire to use it to share to the people the kind of art that deserves appreciation,” says Jimbert.

Kenrick and Jimbert were responsible for the initial designs, which are usually manual illustrations and typography transferred on shirts using traditional silk screen printing.

The group prefers traditional silk screen because for them it is still far more superior compared to heat pressing or digital printing.

Some of the designs focus on nationalism and Filipino humor made to engage people to discussions on local ideologies, says Kenrick.

“We produce unconventional designs that messages to demand their attention. Once the designs have locked the person’s attention, that’s when we come in and engage them in discussions,” he says.

The group is proud that every shirt they sell carry original designs made by local illustrators. “We have very talented Filipino illustrators who win in international design competitions online and most of them are well known in other countries but not here in their own home,” says Kenrick.

Qwezer shirts sell for 300 pesos apiece, both online and in bazaars. You can check out their designs on Facebook or  Tumblr.

“Not everyone appreciates art on canvas so we thought shirts because people appreciate art when they see it often. Art need not be hung on exhibit halls,” Kenrick says.
