QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA–Anti-smoking groups strengthened their call against smoking in a fun run joined by 500 individuals.

The Department of Health (DoH), the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and HealthJustice, a non-governmental organization, joined the fun run.

The aim of the fun run is to promote national awareness on the severe effects of smoking.

The groups also stood firm that a smoke-free Philippines can only be achieved if tobacco companies will follow a World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) requiring graphic warnings on cigarette packs.
In 2010, the DoH issued an Administrative Order requiring tobacco companies to put graphic health warnings on cigarette packs.
Evita Ricafort, a lawyer of the HealthJustice, said that the graphic warnings would help inform vulnerable sector such as the poor and children.

“We have to reduce the demand for tobacco and we can achieve this through evidence-based measures such as placing graphic warnings, raising tobacco taxes and cigarette prices, and banning all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, among others,” Ricafort said.

Ricafort stressed that Filipinos deserve the right to be warned against the effects of smoking such as heart disease, stroke, chronic lung disease, and cancer.

Advocates also want Filipinos to take “yosi kadiri” as a good way to reflect on how smoking affects one’s lifestyle.

Currently there are 17.3 million Filipino smokers, according to the DoH.
