QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA–The Quezon City government has started conducting food handling classes for food vendors near schools as part of a campaign against unsafe food preparation and lack of proper sanitation.

As part of the requirements for the food handling classes, vendors are requested to secure health certificates and sanitation permits. Aside from those operating food stalls, ambulant vendors are also urged to participate in the food handling sessions.

The QC Health Department conducts the food handler classes at barangay halls and health centers.

According to Quezon City health officer Antonieta Inumerable, vendors are urged to comply with the city’s sanitation requirements or they won’t be able to operate.

Also included in the sanitation compliance and food handler classes are operators of school canteens. Canteens inside the schools are often the first choice of students when it comes to food.

Inumerable added that the program will prioritize vendors near schools in District 2 which has the majority of the city’s poor constituents. Also being monitored are toilet and water facilities of different schools within the city.

The official said the health department is also looking into the possibility of allowing only packed food items to be sold among school children to avoid food contamination.

The city’s health department is eyeing to finish the food handler classes and sanitation inspection as soon as possible among 95 public elementary schools and 46 high schools spread over the city’s 142 barangays.
