MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA–Unlike traditional hospitals, Healthway Medical caters to a niche market by offering outpatient healthcare and medical checkups to highly mobile Filipinos.

“The business of offering healthcare is changing, especially now that most Filipinos are highly mobile. The malls are a good venue to make outpatient checkups accessible to more Filipinos, especially those who do not want to fall in long lines,” said Carmi De Leon, Healthway Medical vice president for sales and marketing.

In 2010 alone, some 40,000 visits in a month were made to Healthway’s six clinics in the metro mostly by corporate partners, followed by individual healthcard members and walk-ins, said De Leon.

The company has 500 doctors and specialists in the seven branches.

The company recently launched its seventh clinic in Greenbelt 5 Makati. The new branch, worth over P50 million was established to cater to Makati clients who wanted a branch near their workplace, De Leon added.

“We are expecting more corporate clients for this branch that is why we customized the executive lounge with Wi-Fi connected computers and amenities for them,” said De Leon.

Doing away with the manual listing of medical visits, Healthway Medical established an online database where new customers can register and schedule appointments to a doctor before heading to the clinic, said marketing manager Joven Alcala.

“We are the first in the Philippines to have a network database of patient’s medical records, which facilitates better understanding of medical needs,” said Alcala.

The member’s account also contains the medical history of a patient, which can be reviewed by doctors in any branch and even by the patient to see his medical exam results. First-timers or walk-ins can register their name on the database using computers on the patient’s lounge.

Asked about the privacy and security of the medical records, De Leon said: “We cannot open any medical record without the consent of the patient and only doctors and out records staff can access them.”

Aside from the seven mall-based branches, Healthway Medical has 60 corporate clinic services based in offices and manned by 700 to 800 doctors and nurses nationwide.

Based on consultations, Healthway tracks the common illnesses in the office and offers a wellness program for stress and weight management as well as to prevent and lower risks to cardiovascular diseases.

For people without health cards or medical benefits, Healthway offers a basic annual membership card for P800, which includes unlimited free consultations with family medicine specialists, 50 percent discount on specialist fees (about P400) and 20 percent discount on laboratory fees.

Executive check-up packages cost around P31,000, which entitles members to a “holistic approach to wellness” by getting complete health diagnosis and lifestyle counseling in any Healthway branch. After the morning checkup, members go to Nurture Spa in Tagaytay for an overnight stay.

Over the next five years, Healthway is eying expansion sites in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Cebu based on customer demand.
