QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Inside this antique store along Tomas Morato are remnants of “Old Manila” depicting how Filipinos lived in the past.
True to its name, Siglo Antiques & Collectibles Shop buys and sells centuries-old Filipino relics. Established in 1998 by Mike Nicolas, the shop has since catered to history buffs whose particular interest is historic Manila.
At first look, the store is a typical antique shop. Everything is “old” and if you take time to look closely on the items, you’ll see for yourself what the items are trying to tell.
Most of the items inside are small, like bottles, coins, toys and furniture that I remember throwing away as a kid. Some of these include old soda bottles and records, which now cost at least a few hundred pesos.
All the items represent “Old Manila” in so many ways.
Preserved with plastic were 1950s music sheets (P50) of renowned composer and musician Nicanor Abelardo, which are very “saleable” to old-timers who love kundiman.
A 1926 cedula (P100) reminded me of the Philippine Revolution and photo reprints (P200) of the old places in Manila prove how much the city has changed into what it is today.
Even promotional stickers of the 1966 concert of the Beatles in Manila are framed and on display. Store assistants say young customers come in every now and then saying they wished they were a part of these historic events.
Once in their shop, you’ll also get to realize the intricacies of Filipino culture.
Authentic salakot (P4,500) made from hard pumpkin shells showed the resourcefulness of our ancestors. Furniture, ranging from P4,500 to P100,000, include desks and tukador pieces.
I now at least have a picture of how Manila was. You don’t really have to go to museums to learn a lot about Manila or history. Sometimes a visit to antique shops Siglo Antiques & Collectibles Shop is all it takes.
