QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – Fashion design student Eva Christine Yu originally planned to start a café business with a college friend but ended up opening Uvla instead.
Uvla is one of the many shops inside the famous Cubao Expo (or commonly referred to as Cubao X).
Eva says with the support of parents, she was able to open the shop which she fondly refers to as a little “surprise box” for shoppers.
Eva says the shop has fashionable bags and paintings, contemporary accessories, and hard-to-find vintage toys.
Eva designs the handmade bags, mostly loot bags, hand-painted stainless lunchboxes and eco-friendly tarpaulin handbags which she sells for only P50 to P800.
The accessories were created by Eva’s mom. Called the “Jackfruit Collection,” the items are mostly a mix of antique beads and modern chains.
Eve’s dad has a collection of vintage toy guns and other collections which date as far back as the early 1930s, including American Soap Box Derby pins from the US.
She says Uvla is an extension of the family’s intertwined interests of the arts and toys.
“I thought I was alone on this but in the long run, everyone in the family got involved so now, I’m really determined to develop it into what I originally intended it to be,” she says.
Eva says as a young fashion design student, she is also saving to open her own store space for her designs to be sold in the store in the future.
Eva has still a long way to go in her design studies, but she is hoping customers will see Uvla as a store fit for all ages and personalities.
“It’s a shop, it’s a hangout place but more important, it’s a store for everyone,” Eva says.
