QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA–Like most young students, Angela Manabat is fond of Japanese anime and cartoon characters.
However, unlike her peers who would rather buy items based on anime and cartoons, Angela creates her own and earns from the business.
She was only 16 years old when she started Bini Boshi her own beanie hat business. “Bini Boshi” actually means beanie hats in Japanese.
The Fine Arts student at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman gets inspiration from Japanese anime, cartoons, and even the online game Plants Versus Zombies, to create her own beanie hats and other designs.
Angela’s hats and other fashionable head accessories are designed with colorful characters. One of her bestsellers is the Pea Shooter design from Plants Versus Zombies. The prices of her items range from P200 to P300 depending on the design.
At a young age, Angela is hands-on with the business. Together with her family, she often goes to trade fairs to display the items she designed.
Alex Manabet, Angela’s dad, often helps out on customer inquiries while her brother takes charge of documentation and internet marketing. Angela’s mom takes care of the payments.
The business has helped Angela in her studies and tuition, according to her father, Alex Manabat, which is why the family is helping Angela in her modest business.
Mr. Manabat says that the business targets young customers who can really “relate” to Angela’s designs. He says the whole family actually knows Angela’s designs which make it easier for them to talk to young customers.
Right now, Bini Boshi only produces small orders and does not have its own physical store yet. Angela also accepts personalized orders for companies or seminars.
The business is also open to interested dealers on a consignment basis. “For only P10,000 we can give them a certain number of hats they can sell on their own,” Mr. Manabat says.
