QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— This business is promoting and selling t-shirts and other apparel designed primarily for University of the Philippines (UP) students.

Diliman Republic was started by Monching Romano in February 2010.  The store sells t-shirts with prints such as “Dugong UP,” and other UP-themed designs, such as the “State U” hoodie.

Aside from the t-shirts, Diliman Republic also sells the unique “bluebook” bag. The bluebook is an indispensable item for UP students and is one of the symbols of the school itself.

According to Romano, he does not want to sell the products to UP students only, but as of the moment, he takes pride in serving first his alma mater.

“The tagline ‘Sa wakas meron na rin tayo’ is only because other universities like La Salle and Ateneo have their own apparel lines. Now UP also has its own inside the university compound,” Romano said.

The store is located inside the UP Diliman Campus at the UP shopping center. Romano said that the store tries to offer fresh designs as much as possible.

“We offer something fresh by constantly offering different designs. We also change the designs of a t-shirt even if it’s a best-seller,” he adds.

He also adds that there may be other UP-themed apparels available in the market but Diliman Republic tries to offer something unique. The store taps artists not only from UP but from other universities to have different ideas.

So far, Romano said students are responding positively to the UP-themed designs. “We try to live up to our mission of bringing pride to UP students through the apparels we create,” he said.
