MANILA CITY, METRO MANILA – This Filipino designer continues to make costumes for various theme parties that are becoming popular particularly this Christmas.
“Christmas comes only once in a year. Let’s make it a little less boring while we can,” says costume designer Willie So, the owner of Maning’s Lace Center.
The store, which Willie inherited from his father, is hard to miss once you tread the narrow streets of Quiapo.
Displayed at the façade of his store are elaborate head pieces and colorful costumes which he sees as his personal contributions to people celebrating memorable occasions such as Christmas.
Willie personally designs and creates the wide selection of costumes found in and outside his store. These, he says are mostly in demand beginning October when clients would gear up for their respective Christmas parties.
Though dressing up for theme parties during Christmas has been long celebrated in foreign countries, these parties are fairly new in the Philippines.
In his years of experience specializing in designing costumes for all occasions, Willie says that Filipinos have become adventurous in terms of the designs they prefer.
“The more elaborate and flamboyant the better,” Willie says of the costumes being ordered from him which ranges from Egyptian royalties to different international costumes.
While his patrons prefer foreign costumes for their Christmas theme parties, Willie says the difference lies in how we Filipinos celebrate this special time of the year.
“Costumes may set the mood in parties, it doesn’t change how distinctly we Filipinos come together and celebrate Christmas,” says Willie.
He admits that there are still many Filipinos who are hesitant to wear costumes. “A lot of people disregard the fact that wearing costumes give you something to look forward to, something exciting,” he says.
At the end of the day, Willie says he is just glad to make someone happy every time he hands over a finished product to his anticipating client.
“Not many people might see it, but it’s rewarding what I do,” he says.
