MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – Heading to Cubao X used to be a pain for people coming from far south of the Metro. But this new creative den in Makati offers more than just the perks of proximity, it is said to be an “honest” avenue for young entrepreneurs.

Established by Dustin Uy, The Collective used to be a warehouse for cars, which he converted into a fully functional yet affordable creative space for budding entrepreneurs.

Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet how the place came about out of the owner’s principle of reviving “useless spaces” to its purposeful state. Collective may also refer to “bayanihan”, because the low rent is intended to help young entrepreneurs.

There are now at least 16 entrepreneur-members at The Collective and growing.

Uy veers away from associating The Collective with its counterpart Cubao Expo (or more popularly known as Cubao X). The common denominator is that both have stores that offers rare finds especially for the artsy bargain hunters – be it clothes, shoes and other novelty items.

New Old Bikes, for instance, does not only customize worn out bikes; it  also doubles as a specialized t-shirt printing shop for those who are rocking pop art designs.

There are also stores such as Sundae that target fashion fiends, carrying clothes and sneakers. If traditional art is more your cup of tea, then let Uy’s Outerspace gallery take you to another circa of inspirational art. Ritual is also another popular store catering to fashion connoisseurs.

The place is also a hub for people at night with B-Side, now a popular venue for indie bands and other artists. The blog Style Samurai describes it as a place “where you can just be yourself while enjoying an alternative indie partying vibe”.

The Collective is located in 7274 Malugay Street, Makati City. From Buendia, turn right to Chino Roces, then left at Yakal Street and turn left at Mayapis (parallel to the railroad tracks) then left again into Malugay Street.
