QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA – When Allan Fernando decided to pursue a different career path, he got inspiration from a friend who runs his own vintage store abroad.
From that inspiration sparked a passion to make high fashion attainable for all those who dream of getting a Chanel bag for Christmas.
Allan had no idea that designer clothes from a balikbayan box sent by his friend from Germany would allow him to start his own business. He launched Uber Finds Vintage Fashion Store in 2007 and was able to get the support of local fashion and celebrity stylists who later on became his regular suppliers of an assortment of designer items for his store.
Uber is basically a house converted into a retail space that sports a 1970s look. The place is now considered a haven for both first time and vintage junkie shoppers who seek rare items, designer coats, cocktail dresses, vintage accessories, and pumps.
Allan sells the items at 10 to 15 percent off original prices and if you’re good at haggling, you might be able stretch the bargain a bit more
A year after his store opened, Allan was also able to introduce his own retail brand called “LUV” or Love Uber Vintage. This line is an assortment of designer and avant-garde pieces some made by indie fashion designers whose style Allan believes in.
Allan pushes for people to break the boundary between wearing new and vintage items. For him, people should realize that vintage items work well when matched with the new ones as this creates a fresher look that makes you stand out from the crowd.
Uber has also become museum for fashion designers, both amateur and professional who frequent the place. Allan says these designers would visit and purchase a particular item which they will later on analyze and study so that they can come up with local versions out of the patterns.
Allan shares that with the different backgrounds and motives of shoppers visiting Uber, he’s developed a specific way of strengthening client-retailer relationship. Allan says he tries to give every customer a background of the items they would be interested in.
Most, if not all of items he has displayed in his store were used by celebrities in teleseryes from major TV stations. The rest, Allan adds are basically personal items of VIP clients who just want to clear their closets.
Allan adds that he also advises the shoppers as to which items will work with their wardrobe of choice. He makes sure he extends his services despite handling the business alone, and having full-time job on the side. He says this is to make sure the experience in shopping at Uber is made worthwhile for the shoppers.
The experience that Allan wants his clients to have is simple. It is for them to have their money’s worth for each designer item they will be purchasing from Allan’s humble store.
