QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— It’s not your typical university but Brahma Kumaris offers everyone a ‘master’ degree’ in self-fulfillment.

The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University originated in Hyderabad, Sindh (now considered part of Pakistan) by  Dada Lekhraj (or more popularly known as “Brahma Baba”) to empower women specifically on spirituality.

It is a global non-government organization and a spiritual community with more than 8500 centers spread across five continents.

As requested by selected Quezon City residents, a branch of Brahma Kumaris opened in Kamuning Road in 1991 so they need not go to the one in Makati, which was established way back in 1983.

The center is open to the public every Saturday from 4PM to 6PM where people can learn  and practice Raja Yoga, a meditation that “redefines the self as a soul and enables a direct connection and relationship with the Supreme Source of purest energy and highest consciousness.”

It is known as the “supreme union” and every soul has a right to experience this ultimate relationship, as described by Brahma Kumaris coordinator Rose Uy.

“We focus on spirituality, the soul… the being, because it is who we are. We try to make people remember it because as we say ‘we are human beings’ and we all have good qualities, however, we tend to forget our spirit.. ourselves when we are filled with negative emotions,” says Rose, who’s been a member since 1987.

Rose says the lifestyle people choose often pull them away from their ‘true self’, which is why they tend to hurt others (what people would describe as “nawala sa sarili”). But in the end, the goodness of the person dwells on the soul and not on the body.

She adds Raja Yoga is a meditation that you can practice wherever you are and whatever time of the day you wish to do it.

The courses, carrying titles like “Unlimited self-esteem”, “Soul Mirrors, Harmonious relationships”, “Working hard? Work Smart”, “Breaking the chain of the blame”, are meant to address everyday situations.

Rose says these courses vary according to the needs of the community. These courses are free and open to the public.

“Filipinos are more open to explore spirituality. This is where they get hope and answers at a certain point in their lives, which is really our mission. We help others put themselves in the right direction but not to the point that they will depend on us,” she says, adding that they try to live up to the Brahma Kumaris slogan: ‘When you change, the world changes’.

“Being better person and becoming part of the solution is what we teach instead of letting them be part of the problem and stop putting the blame on others like the culture we’ve grown into. I think that’s a good way of contributing to society.”

Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University is located at #34 T. Gener St. corner Kamuning Road, Quezon City. If you wish to attend their yoga classes, you may call 926-4273 or 414-9421.
