TAGAYTAY CITY, CAVITE – With a breathtaking view of Taal Lake, this antique shop along the main highway sports a quaint feel that is characteristic of a Filipino home. R&R Western Antiques & Decors resulted from the Cueto family’s shared passion for collecting antiques.
“We are trying to preserve that intimate set-up with this store because this business was inspired by our home in Manila,” says Rene Cueto, a former overseas Filipino worker in California.
“Our friends took interest in our collection, which were displayed as mere decors for our home, so we capitalized on that interest,” shares Rene of the shop’s thematic antique collection.
From country animals to old furniture, sports gear, to the iconic Coca-Cola collectibles, Rene says taking care of these antique pieces requires immense dedication.
“We have managed to restore all those that we think are highly functional so that even if it is imported, it can still be used locally for its functionality and not just for its decorative value,” says Rene, adding that the countryside feel of Tagaytay was the perfect place to market their items.
“Tagaytay-based collectors are equally fond of decorative and utilitarian antique pieces. It gives us joy that we can provide what they are looking for.”
Rene adds that it’s important for an antique shop to have something to offer, regardless of the occasion. Be it Christmas, Halloween, or any event celebrated by Filipinos, Rene says they have items fit for such celebrations.
“The items are imported but how it they are used here in our country gives the items local flair” says Rene, adding that Filipinos have a distinct way of using and admiring their items.
He adds that building a loyal clientele is most important for their business. Not only do they try to provide clients with what they are looking for, they also try to teach them how to properly take care of their items.
Rene admits it’s hard to be an antique shop owner and be a collector at the same time.
“We love these items and that makes it really hard to let go that’s why we try to educate them on how best to take care of these items,” says Rene.
Seeing the effect of their shop among visitors and regular clients, Rene says earning an income merely comes in as secondary to what their business means to them and their clients.
“The income becomes less of a priority when you see the desired effects of your business to people,” concludes Rene.
