QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA— Despite the challenges of putting up a flower shop in the busy streets of the city, Blooms and Foliage Inspirations Co. has been doing business for five years now at the heart of Quezon City and still counting.

Located at Scout Gandia corner Scout Torillo in Barangay Sacred Heart Diliman, the flower shop was made possible by four people who share a common interest in gardening.

According to Eddie Tacuyo, sole staff of the shop for five years now, it is not that easy to look after their products especially that the climate is one of the challenges in the city as compared to high lands like Baguio and other countries where they import flowers.

Kailangan ng tiyaga sa pagbabantay sa mga halaman kasi baka matuyo lalo’t mainit dito pero may given naman na araw na itinatagal ang mga bulaklak ( It requires patience in looking after the flowers since it is hot in the Metro but each flowers, however, have particular vase life),” says Tacuyo.

Every after two days, Tacuyo changes the water of the flowers stored in very low temperature and checks which among the plants is no longer good for display. An aster for example lasts for five to seven days while hybrid roses last for longer up to 10 days.

But because flowers are mostly seasonal products in the market, Tacuyo says being a staff in a flower shop also requires good sales talk so that the seasonal customers would surely order and would come back sooner because of satisfaction.

“Kailangan magaling din sa sales talk lalo’t may mga ibang customer din na nakikipagtawaran at nagpapaturo din kung ano bang magandang bilhin para sa isang okasyon (It also requires good sales talk especially with some customers who would want to bargain or ask about the right flower to buy),” says Tacuyo, noting that there are days that they don’t have customers but the owners are just happy to have the shop while Valentine’s Day is always the best selling day for them.

Aside from the flowers, they also offer fresh aragula, lettuce and other vegetables good for culinary herbs. But since fresh goods are perishable, the shop also sells dried chili flakes, tarragon, basil and saffron for 20 pesos.

Pag fresh kasi konti ang life span, at least kapag tuyo na mapapakinabangan pa rin kaya naisip nila itong gawin (Fresh goods have shorter lifespan compared to dried ones which still have use that’s why they (owners) came up with this idea),” he says, adding that they also offer Wedding and events coordination, gift wrapping and plant rentals.

Tacuyo says that it really takes a passion for a flower shop to survive in the city for five years, and that’s what the owners and Tayuco are proud of.
