PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA – Leadership and parenting advocate Anthony Pangilinan recently hosted the local celebration of the 75th anniversary of DC Comics. Himself a comic book enthusiast, Pangilinan had an opportunity to talk about parenting.

Surprisingly, Pangilinan was able to associate the similar qualities of superheroes and parents, particularly how children look up to their parents as much as hero “worshippers” look up to their heroes.

For one, Pangilinan says parents do not want superhero parents but rather authentic parents. These are parents who know the boundaries of their capabilities and are willing to show these to their kids, not to discourage but to show that parents also need help from others to become better.

Pangilinan, who also conducts parenting and leadership trainings, stressed that many parents try to show their children that they are like super heroes.

“When you really think about it, even superheroes are not perfect. They all have weaknesses, they all have another side to them that not even their best friends know about.  We should remember that as parents, we all have those weaknesses, so we have to be honest with ourselves,” he says.

Pangilinan explained that children relate to their parents’ vulnerabilities as they themselves try to understand their own weaknesses and find ways to solve problems.

“When you admit your weaknesses, you’re doing it also for your kids because they will also grow up and face these same dilemmas. They would learn from how you handled these problems,” he says.

In particular, Pangilinan says parents should have a “Popeye moment,” referring to the comic book character Popeye’s statement: “That’s all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more.”

According to him, parents must act accordingly in dire situations and be able to rise up to challenges. Even community leaders and politicians must also hold to their responsibilities as heroes to their communities.

“We have situations that can’t allow such corruption, inequality, injustice. Hopefully parents and leaders will make the decision to face their problems at home, in the community and create solutions that their children would learn from,” Pangilinan says.
