A tribute to Filipino mothers

TANAY, RIZAL – Every second Sunday of May, all of us honor the person we owe our life. They are true unsung heroes when ironically, they are there all along.

Mother’s Day is believed to have emerged from an ancient custom in Greece, worshiping Cybele, mother to Greek Gods. The Romans had a similar custom worshiping the goddess Juno. The actual time of the year varies; in Norway, for example, it is celebrated in February.

For those who remain clueless how to celebrate this special day, Bianca Consunji of the Philippine Daily Inquirer suggests five ways to make Mother’s Day an extraordinary day.

Clickthecity.com and Spot.ph also rounded up suggestions where to take Mom this Sunday. But if you don’t have cash, an online greeting card is only a few clicks away – just make sure she sees it.

Since it’s Mother’s Day again, let me take this chance to honor my mom, whose love and support is always immeasurable and unconditional, even when raising five of us children on her own. Our father died when we were still small.

She was always strong and prayerful and despite life’s challenges, it did not show. She was very protective of us, having assumed the role of both mother and father.

She was always the picture of a perfect mother for me, even though her voice is so high-pitched it substituted for an alarm clock in the morning. Even if we’re all grown up now, I always like hearing the same voice.

No matter how you choose to make mom feel special, it’s not only once a year that we should do so. Make everyday feel like Mother’s Day.
